Abstract

POETRY.txt uses meta humor to discuss the culture of anonymity and alienation that exists when one self-broadcasts themselves online. The viewer is placed in the position of a woman using the Internet in various ways. Through this journey, the viewer is allowed intimate time with a pseudo-hip, white, socially aware Brooklynite as she hashes out her feelings of social isolation, feeling of exposure to the male gaze, her history of sexual trauma, as well as her own privileged position in society. I wish to highlight how access to the Internet acts as a facilitator of the sexual exploitation of women.

Annie Malamet is a video installation artist living and working in New York City. She graduated from Marlboro College with a BA in Art History & Visual Art in 2012. She is currently enrolled in the Photography, Video, and Related Media MFA program at The School of Visual Arts and is set to graduate in 2015. In addition to this, she is the head editor of the Visual Art section of Posture Magazine. Her perspective is heavily influenced her age, her fat body, her queerness, her feminism, and her experience doing Internet-based sex work.
